How do I request a backdated policy cancellation?
A request to cancel a Goodcover policy effective on a past date requires documentation supporting that exact date. Backdating is subject to review and is not effective unless Goodcover approves and confirms it.
A backdated cancellation changes a policy's cancellation effective date to a date in the past.
Goodcover may consider a backdated cancellation when you provide sufficient documentation showing that you no longer needed the coverage as of the exact date requested. Every request is reviewed, and approval is not guaranteed.
Documentation must support the exact date
Your documents should clearly connect you, the insured address, and the reason for cancellation to the date you are requesting.
Depending on your circumstances, supporting documentation may include:
- A declarations page or other proof of replacement renters insurance showing its effective date
- A homeowners insurance declarations page and closing records if you purchased a home
- A signed lease termination or move-out confirmation
- A dated statement from the landlord or property manager confirming when you surrendered possession
- Other official, dated records that establish when the relevant change occurred
The most useful documents are legible, issued or confirmed by a reliable third party, and show:
- Your name
- The insured property address
- The relevant effective, move-out, termination, or closing date
- Enough context to explain why coverage was no longer needed
A document does not guarantee approval. Goodcover may request additional information to verify the date or circumstances.
What may not be sufficient on its own
An unsupported statement that you intended to cancel earlier may not establish a backdated cancellation date.
Undated screenshots, documents for a different person or address, or records that do not show when the change occurred may also require additional evidence.
If you have several documents that establish different parts of the timeline, submit them together.
How to submit your request
Email support@goodcover.com and include:
- Your full name
- Your Goodcover policy number
- The insured address
- The exact cancellation date requested
- A short explanation of why that date applies
- The supporting documentation
Use a clear subject such as Backdated cancellation request. Keep copies of the request and every document you send.
What happens after submission
Goodcover will review the request and documentation. The team may ask for clarification or additional records before making a decision.
Do not assume the requested date has been approved. Wait for written confirmation showing the cancellation effective date.
An approved backdated cancellation means the policy ended on the confirmed past date, so coverage does not apply after that date. Tell Goodcover about any loss or claim that may relate to the period involved in your request.
How a refund is calculated
If Goodcover approves an earlier cancellation date, the change may affect the amount of unused premium.
Any refund is calculated under the policy terms and applicable state requirements. Premium already earned while coverage was active, policy or installment fees, and any applicable minimum earned premium may affect the final amount.

Frequently asked questions
What documents can support a backdated cancellation request?
Depending on the reason, useful documentation may include a declarations page showing replacement coverage, a signed lease termination or move-out confirmation, a landlord or property manager statement confirming when possession ended, or closing and insurance records showing that you purchased a home. The documents must support the exact requested date.
What must the documentation show?
The documentation should be legible and dated, identify you and the relevant insured address, explain or demonstrate the change in circumstances, and support the specific cancellation date requested.
Does submitting documentation guarantee that my cancellation will be backdated?
No. Goodcover reviews each request and may require additional information. The policy is not considered backdated unless Goodcover approves the request and confirms the effective date.
