Closed Your Payment Account? Here's How Your Refund Check Works

If your bank account or card has been closed, refunds will fail. We'll mail you a check instead. Here's what we need and when to expect it.

If you are unsure

  1. You can always contact your bank to find out how they handle refunds sent to closed accounts. Sometimes they may still accept the refund and get the funds to you.
  2. If your card number changed, the refund may still go through. Your bank or card issuer can confirm how they handle refunds sent to a previous card number.
  3. If a refund is unsuccessful, it can take up to 30 days for the funds to be returned to Goodcover and for us to receive notification that the refund failed. Because of this, there may be a delay before we're able to take the next steps.

Why you're getting a check

Sometimes refunds can't go back the way the money originally came in. When Goodcover issues a refund, it is sent back to the original payment method used for the charge. If the original payment method has been closed or can no longer accept the refund, the financial institution may reject it and return the funds to Goodcover.

Once we receive confirmation that an electronic refund was unsuccessful, we can issue the amount owed to you by paper check.

Because the refund is tied to the original transaction, we cannot send it electronically to a different payment method—even if you've since added or updated a card or bank account in your Goodcover account.

Make sure we have the right mailing address

Since the check comes by mail, the most important thing is that we have an address where you can actually receive it. Before your check goes out:

  1. Check whether the mailing address on your account is still current. If you've moved recently, it may be out of date.
  2. Let us know if anything changed. A quick message to our support team with your updated address is all it takes.
  3. When in doubt, confirm anyway. It's much easier to verify an address up front than to track down a check sent to an old place.

A check sent to an old address can mean delays or a lost check — confirming your address first keeps things simple..

How long it takes

Once everything is squared away, your check goes out in the mail. Give it a couple of weeks to arrive. Delivery times vary depending on where you live and postal carrier schedules, so don't worry if it doesn't show up immediately.

Haven't received your check?

If a couple of weeks have passed and there's still no check in your mailbox:

  1. Double-check that the mailing address you gave us is correct.
  2. Reach out to our support team and we'll look into where things stand.
  3. If a check truly went missing, we can work through next steps to get you made whole.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my refund if my bank account or card was closed?

When the bank account or card on file is closed, a refund can't be sent back to it. Instead, we issue a paper check by mail.

Do I need to update my mailing address?

We'll use the mailing address on your account. If it isn't current, let us know your updated address before the check goes out — checks sent to old addresses can be delayed or lost.

How long does the check take to arrive?

Once mailed, checks typically take a couple of weeks to arrive, though delivery times vary by location. If it's been longer than that, contact our support team and we'll investigate.
